Hoodies originated in the medieval period from monks, who wore a long hooded garment called a Cowl. They next appeared in 1930’s America, when Champion, a sportswear manufacturing company, produced them for workers labouring in the freezing wintery conditions of upstate New York. However, their popularity rose sharply in the 1970’s alongside the surge of HipHop music.

It was now, with a little help from Sylvester Stallone in Rocky, that hoodies really made their mark on the fashion world. For better or worse by the 1990’s Hoodie’s were worn everywhere, particularly by teenagers from the poorer sections of society.  It was the image of teenage rebels, loitering on street corners, begging for beer outside shops, smoking cigarettes in the local park and committing petty crime that tainted the innocent item.

The introduction of the face-masking hoodie in 2007, introduced by clothing company Criminal Damage didn’t help the item’s reputation. UK politicians were up in arms with David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary, saying that the jumper could be part of a: “hooligan’s tool kit”. There is now a must-have bullet-proof hoody for every upmarket gangster’s wardrobe at £300.  Manufactured by British company Bladrunner it can stop a 9mm Magnum handgun, not a positive association for the jumper.

However, having criminal connections, being night-wear to bored teenagers puking in the park and getting politicians excitable isn’t the extent of the hoodies influence.

Universities started using hoodies to publicise their institutions in the 1990’s. 1.       Don’t try out a brand spanking new make-up and hair person for the first time on the day of the wedding. Do take the time to test someone out first. Several weeks in advance, consider trying someone out for make-up and hair as a test trial run. Do this regardless of how good their reputation is. This way, you’re going to be sure that no one is going to make your make-up look clownish or make a nightmare of your hair.

2.       Make sure that everyone in the bridal party tries on their dress or suit before the big day, just in case any mix ups or mismatches occurred with alterations.

3.       Pack a sewing kit for any potential wardrobe malfunctions with bridal party clothing. Make sure there are plenty of safety pins in various sizes, some two-sided tape (to fix hems or help with strapless dresses), and some stain remover wipes in case of any spills, in addition to standard sewing kit items like needles, thread, and spare buttons.
