Ten years ago, a man wearing a plain V-neck tee and drinking a Pabst would never be accused of being a trend-follower. But in 2008, such things have become shameless clichés of a class of individuals that seek to escape their own wealth and privilege by immersing themselves in the aesthetic of the working class.

Leryn Franco is known to continue her competitions outside of the Olympics.  During the off season she isn’t always throwing Javelins around and training her body; in fact she spends a lot of that time off the field and on the catwalk.  Javelin thrower by day, famous super-star model by night.  Now while her grace and poise puts her in a perfect position for modeling, it seems that maybe she shouldn’t of strayed from her country’s sports t-shirt. 

Leryn Franco is upping her profile again with a trot down the catwalk.

In her most recent catwalk the outfit that she was wearing (which left little to nothing up for imagination) was put in one of the worst positions possible for any fashion model.  And no, it wasn’t tumbling down face first into the photographers.  It was letting the top of her dress slip down exposing the audience to a lot more than they expected to see (though I’m sure they were all glad for the nip slip).  Just imagine if models were wearing something like babydoll t-shirts, this problem would never even happen.  I say forget the see-through, super thin fashionable items of the year and go back to modeling clothes that people can actually wear and afford.

 

I think part of the answer is the wonderful power of contrast. Plaid means business — or at least retirement — but shorts definitely don’t. So plaid shorts add a sort of playful attitude to the maturity of plaid patterns. And this can be a great trick to play, at least compared to other fashion-powered contrasts.

Plaid lets you start off with a premise of maturity, and that’s a great asset. When you’re wearing plaid shorts, people know you picked an unusual pattern, and that you added it to a more youthful article of clothing. That mature pattern means that you know what you’re doing — that if they think you’re weird, the joke’s on them. Unlike other similar fashion choices, plaid shorts don’t add the risk that you’ll just look weird: if you’re wearing plaid, you must know what’s up.

Plaid has other advantages, as well. It’s a pattern that has been around for a long time, so if your new plaid shorts catch the tail end of one trend, you’ll be on the vanguard for the next. And since shorts are always in style for their utility and comfort, plaid shorts will still be good to have even if you’re not showing them off so much.

The best thing about plaid shorts, by far, is that their recent popularity has encouraged many more designers and retailers to pay attention to them. If you’re in the market for ,plaid shorts you’re likel to find plenty of stores with a great selection of shorts that are perfect for your needs.

When you pick out plaid shorts, it’s important to pay attention to a few factors. Comfort is almost a given — most are made with fairly nice material, and they’re roomier than most legwear. Last night, Sarah Palin decided to wink to America. It’s the Al Gore sigh in the year 2008. It’s the Howard Dean scream. It’s… on a t-shirt!

Everything we own comes from an Asian continent.  Why?  I haven’t the slightest idea anymore.  Do employers and people on wallstreet have any idea how much money American would rake in if it produced it’s own products?  How many jobs it would give Americans that deserve it?  The arrogance of bankers, congress, and politicians alike amazes me, but I never thought I would see the day that even the graphic t-shirts that I’ve come to love would fall prey to economic troubles and Asian outsourcing.  Even those trendy artists and tree huggers alike that claim their tees that they sell on the streets of major cities are ‘homemade’ fail to note that the cotten t-shirts that they are printing on come from China, Taiwan, or some other country selling them at dirt cheap wholesale prices.  Ninety-seven percent of all clothing sold in the United States is no longer made in the U.S. Yet, Minnesota is home to two long-standing textile manufacturers. 

Today I am offering a retrospective, and a digital monument to all of those creative graphic t-shirts made in America.

2.    Students, lose the backpacks.
There’s enough controversy going around about the detrimental effects of heavy backpacks on students’ backs.  Studies show that wearing excessively heavy backpacks on a daily basis can cause serious problems in the neck, back, and shoulder areas.  Don’t risk getting a back injury at such an early age.  Get you and your friends to try putting some of those heave books into cute messenger bags instead and carry the rest. It will be worth it in the long-run.

3.    Go green!
There are far too many people on the streets carrying a handbag and 3 plastic bags full of stuff.  Let’s consolidate and save plastic! Put all of your newly bought goodies into a cute messenger bag, and save the environment! Being green friendly will never go out of style.

4.    Show your uniqueness.
The great thing about cute messenger bags is that you can make them your own.  Even if it’s a solid color, you can still add your own style and flair. Sew some unique thread into the fabric, iron a patch on, tack some pins into it.  Make yourself a unique bag that no one else has! If that’s not style, I don’t know what is.

5.    It’s a digital world.
Now that wireless internet is available virtually everywhere, why not bring your laptop along for the ride? There are tons of cute messenger bags specially made for laptops that will allow you to bring your digital life everywhere you go. The original designer jeans are said to date as far back as the 1850’s when a textile merchant by the name of Levi Strauss developed a durable pant that could be worn by laborers in the California mines.  For several decades, they were used by factory workers and coal miners as a sturdy trouser and, in a sense, embodied the hard-working, persevering spirits of American laborers during the late 19th century. Then in the 1950’s, Hollywood movies such as “Rebel Without a Cause” inspired anti-conformity notions among teenagers, and the image of blue denim jeans transformed into a statement of rebellion.  This concept continued throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s during the Vietnam War.  The emergence of bell-bottom jeans attracted anti-war hippies and feminist revolutionaries who considered jeans to be a symbol protest.  From the 1980’s through the 1990’s, the blue jean trend caught the eye of many major fashion designers, and the manufacturing of designer jeans proliferated at an exponential rate. Famous celebrities were being seen wearing designer jeans everywhere, and everyone instantly caught on.  They were ubiquitous and affordable. Anyone who was anyone had a pair of designer jeans, regardless of their economic or social status.  It wasn’t until the turn of the millennium that designer jeans became what they are today: a status symbol.

As production costs increased in the late 1990’s, so did the price of jeans. Designers realized the potential for increased sales and profitability by creating a product that screamed “luxury” and “status” to those trying to climb the ranks.  Companies used popular celebrities to endorse their brand name and created an unprecedented buzz around these “must-have” products that sent people of all ages running to department stores everywhere. As designer jeans evolved into a status symbol, it gave rise to another issue: counterfeiting.  Popular brands were becoming more expensive and trendy, but as a result, less people were able to afford them.  This resulted in counterfeit versions of “cool” brands that were being sold on the streets for 30% or less of the retail value.  Unfortunately, this issue remains a big problem for many major fashion companies as it continues to be a detriment to their overall profitability.  But then again, maybe they shouldn’t be charging so much in the first place? I suppose that’s up to you to decide.
