The hoodie might seem like the latest youth fashion trend, but did you know that it has an ancient history? Surprisingly, the hoodie is not all that different from garments worn in the Middle Ages. Back then, the hoodie was part of a monk’s formal wear. He’d have on a long tunic or a robe and top it with a cowl or a hood. However it took several centuries for the hoodie as we know it now to make it to the mainstream.

Every time you open a fashion magazine, style editors are celebrating the newest fashion trend or must-have fashion piece. If you rely on fashion magazines for advice about what to wear, you will undoubtedly find yourself investing in items that you wear for a few months, which then disappear into the dark depths or your closet – or the land of no return. If you find you keep buying trendy pieces that end up in the back of your closet or in a box on its way to the Goodwill, maybe you are one of the million Americans suffering from fashion bandwagon syndrome.

Each year, New York is home to Fashion Week, where thousands of celebrities and well known designers gather to debut the hottest trends for women’s and men’s apparel for the upcoming season. From evening wear, sportswear, casual wear and swim wear to accessories and shoes; Fashion Week has it all, or does it? One aspect that is omitted each year in this spectacular event is children’s fashion. But, have no fear moms, because in this segment, we will look at boys must haves for the fall season, from apparel and accessories to outerwear and shoes.

The first New York Fashion Week was held in 1943 and was actually called Press Week. At that time, it was the world’s first organized fashion week – meant to draw attention away from French fashion houses and designers during World War II when industry insiders weren’t able to travel to Paris. Eleanor Lambert, a fashion publicist, organized the event as a means to bring American designers to the attention of fashion journalists who normally overlooked them. Press Week was an all-around success and popular fashion magazines such as Vogue began to feature American designers alongside, and sometimes instead of, French fashion.

When New York puts on an event, they go all out. From the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to New Year’s Eve in Times Square, New York City knows how to throw a party. On September 8th the streets will be filled once again. On their third year, Fashion’s Night Out will run the streets with vendors, fashion vistas, and celebrities to raise money for the New York AIDS Fund.
