Back in the day, you thought it was cute when your girlfriend slept in your T shirt, or served you breakfast in bed dressed in your dress shirt for the day. But thanks to modern trends towards androgyny, she just might put you to shame with her taste in ‘masculine’ fashion.

The trend towards androgyny has a lot to do with existential shifts and greater interconnectivity on the global village. But what really matters here is what it means for fashion. For quite a few years now big designers have been pushing the traditional gender stereotypes in the fashion world. Boys wearing more flowing, feminine pieces, girls who dominate suits and pants, and this radicalization had filtered down into every department store on earth. Boyfriend jeans for girls, tight, fitted tank tops for guys – everywhere you look there is design flying in the face of traditional sexual roles and perceptions.

This is great, and is nowhere more evident than in urban fashion. Designers in this niche market are tasked with creating pieces that are cool, comfortable, trendy and wearable, and they are hitting the nail on the head. Major cosmopolitan fashion hubs like London and New York will testify to these trends. A hoodie, t-shirt and jeans with canvas sneakers are now likely to be worn by a guy or a girl. And before you say that’s always been the case, I’m not talking about rancid over-sized skating apparel from the grungy 90’s. These are high-end pieces designed and worn by a very style-conscious market, and they cost a pretty penny.

Every aspect of design in contemporary cities is shifting towards an intersection between conformity and individuality. People want to look like they know what’s going on in the world of fashion, and then they want to stamp their name on their clothes as an outward expression of their ideals. Print T’s, cargo pants, unisex cardigans, and tote bags are bridging the gap between comfort, design and functionality, and guys and girls are eating it up. Be it hats, accessories, prints or T’s, the distinction between male and female is melting at an amazing and exciting rate. So don’t smirk when you see a girl who is dressed in a blazer and a trilby, rather take a look at yourself and wonder whether or not you are old fashioned or simply way behind the times.

So you’ve just graduated from college. It recently hit you that you are going to start working in the real world. This means automatic maturity is expected. This also means that there are some things you should probably get rid of as well as things you should invest in when it comes to your clothing. Time to get rid of those clothes that make you look like a child.

Shoes

Before: The Uggs

Oh the glory of the button down shirt. If you aren't quite sure what this is, let me explain. It is a t-shirt that has a split down the middle of the front. You then proceed to button the two sides together to make it connect. Ingenious right? Invest in a practical dressy shirt that looks professional.

In college, I am sure it is acceptable to throw on a pair of Australian furry boots when you need to get somewhere quick. This is not going to fly when you are working in an office as an intern. Throw those out, or better yet, burn them. There is no need for them anymore unless your pet is looking for a warm place to sleep at night.

After: The heels

Time to invest in a practical pair of pumps. You might be groaning just thinking about how bad your feet will hurt after walking around in heels for 8 hours. News flash: not all heels are uncomfortable. And I am not lying. Find a pair of comfortable heels that are professional and conservative.

Bottoms

Before: The sweat pants

If you wake up late for class what do you throw on? I can imagine your answer is probably sweats. Sure, I bet your professors don’t say anything but imagine if you woke up late to teach one day. Standing in front of a classroom of kids wearing sweats probably will not get you a lot of respect. Most likely, they will just point and laugh.

After: The dress pants

Make sure you buy at least one pair of nice trousers and don’t be afraid to spend a little bit more money than usual on them. Find nice black, khaki, or grey slacks that will last you for a while. Make sure they are a solid, neutral color that will match with lot of different tops. Mixing and matching will be key.

Tops

Before: The college t-shirt

Go Wildcats! Sure, it’s game day. Wear red and black to be spirited. Don the college tee that you bought freshman year. No one will say a word about it. In fact, they may even praise you for being so school spirited. This is only true while you are still in school. Once you graduate, no one at your new job will care about your alma mater. Plus, you won’t necessarily have bragging rights over your coworker’s schools.

After: The button-down shirt

Oh the glory of the button down shirt. If you aren’t quite sure what this is, let me explain. It is a t-shirt that has a split down the middle of the front. You then proceed to button the two sides together to make it connect. Ingenious right? Invest in a practical dressy shirt that looks professional. Buy neutral colors such as white or black so that it will match with many different things. Button down shirts look classy and you will be treated with a lot more respect than you would wearing a t-shirt.

For those of you that love getting the latest look without breaking the bank, there are easy, affordable ways to adopt fall’s fashion must-haves into your already existing wardrobe. And for those of you that insist on keeping things comfortable, sprucing up your basic t-shirt is a chic way to keep cozy as the weather gets cooler. This season’s styles range from 30s romantic classics to 70s boho chic, and all are easy to pull off with sophisticated accessories. Say bye-bye to a plain tee and spice things up with the following fall trends:

Crisp Cover-ups

This fall, transform your t-shirts into fall fashionista status with the season’s most popular cover-ups: belted cardigans, fur vests, blazers, and trenches. Blazers make you feel more sophisticated and work-savvy, not to mention that they look edgy-cool paired with jeans and a tank. Try a rose or cream-colored one for day and sleek black or gray one for night. For weekend brunches and shopping, toss on an oversized lacy cardigan or plaid trench to keep cute.

Bright Shades

Crazy colors and patterns are all the rage for fall, from flirty florals to rainbow brights. Channel your inner celebrity, and throw on a pair with your white tee to look both mysterious and trendy. Cat eye, oversized, wayfarer, and aviator are the most popular shapes this season, especially with a futuristic-fresh spin. Be inspired by John Lennon and throw on a pair of delicate round sunnies with colored lenses: a chic 70s fall fashion do.

Loud Neckwear

Animal print scarves and neon necklaces are the wardrobe centerpieces for fall. On autumn days when you’re wearing jeans and your simple white t-shirt, a statement necklace or scarf is the perfect addition to your outfit. Update your tee with a royal or bright blue statement necklace or scarf, which is the “it” color for fall. Chunky necklaces with metallic or girly details scream sass without trying too hard, especially with a low key outfit.

Classic Boots

Be a trendsetter this season with a pair of flat leather riding boots. You’ll find them so comfortable and chic that you’ll want them in every color, from black to camel. Boots are a classy why to spice up your t-shirt or blouse, especially if both are tucked into a pair of skinny jeans. You don’t have to be Kate Middleton to pull this look off: you just need a little royal confidence.

Luxxe-looking Bags

Whether it’s cross body, quilted, leather, or messenger bags, Luxxe-looking purses are definitely a fall do. If you feel like giving your t-shirt an edgy twist, try purses with chain or studded straps. For a classier twist, opt for purses with cool faux fabrics, like fur, crocodile, ostrich, or fringe. When you have an amazing fall bag on your arm, your outfit will look impeccable and stylish even in a basic tee.

From Grease’s customised Pink Lady jackets in the 1950s to the iconic “Choose Life” tees of the eighties; Madonna and Britney’s famous sequinned slogan shirts of the early noughties to the tongue-in-cheek supermodel catchphrases House of Holland sent down catwalks in 2009, custom and personalised clothing has always been a part of the fashion landscape in one way or another. Customised high school and college custom clothing has been a staple of campuses across the US for decades, and recent years have seen the classic varsity style go transatlantic, appearing on sweatshirts and hoodies in universities in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.

Whether top style pundits are hailing it as the latest trend in the great Fashion Cycle or not, there will always be a place for personalised and custom clothing. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj are encouraging us to say and wear what we think. Although you may want to play it a bit safer than Gaga’s infamous meat dress, custom fashion has always been a great means of self-expression. It is a way of making what we wear truly unique and entirely personal to us.

On the flipside, personalised clothing can also identify you as part of crowd – a college, sorority or fraternity or a sports team. I have a hoodie from my first year of university, emblazoned with my first year nickname, and I still wear it now (years after graduation). It’s a nice way of remembering my time at college and at the time was a proud badge that I was part of that particular group.

I think that’s where the timeless popularity of custom clothing lies – it’s just so versatile. Whether you use it to show your individualism or your membership of a group, you can do whatever you want with it.

And now with new production techniques, online shopping and reasonably priced worldwide shipping, custom or personalised clothing can now be yours with just a couple of clicks of your mouse. The days of painstaking, time-consuming and expensive hand-stitching and printing have been replaced by quicker and more cost-efficient methods, meaning custom clothes are accessible in a way they weren’t even 10 years ago.

Meaning – you can do your clothes your way, right now.

T-shirts are one of the most versatile forms of clothing. You can pair it with other clothing items like jeans, track pants, shorts, and skirts to achieve different kinds of looks. For instance, with a pair of jeans and a jacket, a t-shirt can make you look trendy. Team it with a pair of track pants and you can look sporty and casual. Another aspect that makes t-shirts so great is that they can be transformed by you, right at home, to make them a customized clothing item. Here are some interesting do-it-yourself projects that you can take up, to make-over your t-shirt into a garment of your choice:

Tube-top

A tube top is one of the best options to wear to a night party in the summer. It frees your shoulder and lets you make the most of a night of dance and music. You can transform your t-shirt into a tube top, irrespective of its size or shape. You will need a t-shirt, scissors, ribbon or drawstring of the same color as the t-shirt, needle and thread. To get started, lay your t-shirt on a table or flat surface. Cut in a straight line from the shoulder, along the seam, down to the bottom of the t-shirt on the left, and then the right.

Follow this by cutting off the top portion of the t-shirt beneath the collar, in a straight line. With slogan t shirts, be careful to cut such that the punch-lines are not destroyed. Turn the t-shirt inside out and sew both sides leaving half inch on either end. Next, you will have to create button holes to accommodate the drawstrings that will run around the neck of the tube-top and hold it secure when you wear it. Make button holes about an inch and a half away from the top seam and such that each hole is about an inch away from the other. Thread the drawstring and your tube top is ready to wear. What’s more, if the sides of the t-shirt are cut to suit the lower half of your body, it can even double as a skirt.

Halter-top

Halter-tops look really interesting if they are made from funny t shirts, preferably with a round neck. To create this top, you will need all the materials required for a tube top. Start by cutting the sleeves and bottom seam of your t-shirt. Cut an inch below the collar to create a new neck for the top. Turn the t-shirt over and cut the back to an extent that you want. Fold the front neck portion of the t-shirt by an inch, sew and thread the drawstring. When you wear your new halter-top, scrunch the neckline such that it crowds around your neck, and tie the drawstring.

It’s amazing what happens to those famous Disney actors that you grow up with; you watch them on television parading around as little kids and when you’re turn your back they’re taking off their t-shirts and showing everyone just how ‘grown up’ they really are. I was browsing the internet this morning (with all good intentions) and I came across a short article about Adrienne Bailone, one of the famous “Cheetah” members supposedly a series of risque pictures were leaked onto the internet from her personal computer (4chan must be having a blast with this). The actress who is normally seen on television wearing babydoll t-shirts and trendy distressed jeans had nothing to had for whomever the pictures were intended for. Below is a clip from the article that brought her to my attention:

“Melbourne, November 10 (ANI): Naked pictures of singer Adrienne Bailon have leaked on the Internet, making her the latest Disney star involved in a nude scandal.

The 25-year-old Adrienne had apparently taken her nude pictures to send to beau Rob Kardashian, and had lost her laptop at JKF airport in October, reports the Daily Telegraph….” (http://www.thaindian.com)

Kardashian, eh? Not the first time that we’ve heard that last name involved with some sort of sex/nude/underage scandal and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Why Adrienne was sending him of all the people in the world pictures is beyond my comprehension. All the same, a simple Google search will turn up the pictures if you’ve got to find out whether the story is fake or not.
